Strategy #34 Mutilate one’s Body… 苦肉计

Mutilate one’s Body…

This strategy is very convincing when one wishes to make a statement to demonstrate loyalty.

During feudal times, spies preparing to enter a neighboring country would often volunteer to cut off a body part or pick out an eye.

This was done to convince the lord of a neighboring country that they had been mistreated and as evidence of their sincere desire to serve their new lord.

Wu Tzu a Bing Fa master who lived through the Spring Autumn period and as a young man he travelled from court to court in China trying to secure a position with a Feudal Lord.

After countless rejections and personal tragedy he obtained a position in the court of Lu.

The King of Lu noticed his talents and appointed him commander of the army in the face of an imminent attack by their neighbor Chi.

Advisors to the King, jealous of Wu’s ability put his loyalty to question by noting that Wu’s wife was a native of Chi.

Wu demonstrated his unquestionable loyalty to the King of Lu by killing his wife!

One of the objectives of the students of Tiananmen Square in 1989, was to make the World aware that many people wanted democracy and greater freedom.

In April 1989, students at top universities in Beijing commemorated the death of the Communist Party chief and political reformer Hu Yaobang at Tiananmen Square, marking the beginning of the pro-democracy protests. Jian Liu

Because of the world press coverage they achieved this objective before the massacre.

Another objective was to bring about immediate democratic reforms, which were agreed to by the government in an attempt to bring an end to the demonstrations.

The students knew these concessions could not be relied on and they knew that blood must and would be shed.

They used their bodies to communicate their message of liberty and democracy for China across the World. Could this be happening again in Hong Kong?
