In considering a new strategic intention for a club and the total commitment of all members to regain or gain a new ladder position in their competition, the following may be considered in the formulation of change:
- Stop thinking they are a club that can go no further and develop a steely determination to improve the overall position of the club.
- Adopt a ruthless approach to achieving this objective through a thorough examination of player’s attitudes, training attendance, performance on the field and general support.
- Ensure organization and discipline is thoroughly understood by all players and members of the club’s committee.
- Elect player leadership groups for each team, their responsibilities can include the following:
- Set the team’s aims and objectives and write a new mission statement and Introduce the new focus in the club based on team responsibility.
- Create a team ‘code of conduct’.
- Assist the coaches by suggesting new team training plans.
- Conduct regular leadership meetings.
- Increase the number of new players and personal friends to the club.
- Remind the players of their ‘Obligations’ to the club – included below.
The late Mick Lee who became the Lord Mayor of the Town of Victoria Park said on the opening of our new clubrooms at Carlisle Reserve in 1970 that we all had an obligation as the best footballers and cricketers in our district to be proud of what we were doing and to strive to excel in all our activities.
(It was a pity we didn’t do so in the future as some of our senior players became disgruntled with our coaching staff. Instead of realising how important their role was in the overall framework of the club, they let themselves down by not exerting their influence on the younger players on and off the field, thereby letting their team and club down. This resulted in our relegation from 'A' grade to finish up in 'D' grade a few seasons later.)
Mick went on to say that some of you may think that nobody in the community thinks or cares much about what we are doing here, however there are many people around us who do care and they include; your family, your friends, workmates, people who follow us in the local papers, the bloke who walks his dog around the oval and your sponsors, all have a vested interest.
Players need to consider their obligations to the club making it possible for them to turn out on Saturdays. These people include: the club committee, coaches and team runners, team managers, physio’s, goal and boundary umpires, canteen staff, scoreboard attendants, gate keeper etc. All of these people need to know the team that is out there, is committed.
Note:
One of our local doctors who sponsored our club a couple of years ago said the reason he made his commitment was due to medical research showing that young men and women who were involved in sporting clubs were much less likely to commit suicide than those who never participated in any organized sporting activity.
