The best football clubs are also learning places and training centers and the best teams in sport usually dwell in places where this takes place and these factors are central to the ethos and structure of the club.
This does not occur automatically, it requires a deliberate, conscious approach by club management and the coach. Many in modern sport look to ‘buy the best’ in order to succeed however because of budgetary constraints and difficulty in attracting players from a limited catchment area the team struggles to achieve the expectations of the committee, supporters and sponsors.
A coach placed in this situation has to differentiate from his predecessors by adding value to his charges by stamping out his principles, values, ideas and habits with them. This task can be difficult in many ways yet it can be most effective, satisfying and an enduring route to building a great team.
Many of the players who join clubs come with a variety of skills, abilities, attitudes and attributes. Many have been confident in their capabilities yet they have had poor habits and practices in terms of training and playing with no real insight into their capacity.
The process of change can be difficult for some as the first step to improvement is acknowledgement of past errors and a commitment to change. This is affected by club members who are honestly self-aware, humble enough to want to keep improving and willing to take responsibility for their actions and learn from their errors.
'It is a doctrine of war not to assume the enemy will not come, but rather to rely on ones readiness to meet him, and not to assume he will not attack, but rather to make your army invincible.'
