Cougars lower their Standard!

Round 6, 14 May 2022 (C1) Kingsley V’s Kalamunda

It must have been the long journey to Kingsley in the northern suburbs or the thought of an easy game against Kingsley who were sitting in sixth position on the (C1) ladder that resulted in the cougars 5 point loss.

It was clear from the first quarter that the Cougars were ‘not on song’ as they were making skill errors in their disposal and failing to judge marks that they would normally take. Coach Trenberth ‘congratulated’ them at quarter time saying they were in front by six points however it was the worst quarter of footy they had played this season!

During the second quarter Kingsley realised the cougars were not performing well under the pressure they were exerting with their height,  strong bodies and tackling. They began to kick the ball into their forward line with well-directed  kicks to Callum Douglas, last season’s Colts fairest and best winner and veteran 250 game legend Ben Gavranich who kicked their total of three goals for the quarter. The Cougars managed to kick two goals in this term to finish two points up at half time.

In the third quarter the physical strength of Kingsley was starting to take its toll on the Cougars who were beginning to ‘turn the ball over’ by hand and foot as they tried to break away from Kingsley’s hard tackling.

Our backline at this stage was under siege, fortunately held together by Bret Van Groningen, JJ Jennings and Jarrod Brockbernd, who held Kingsley to three goals for the quarter. The Cougars could only manage 1.2, before the three-quarter time break and trailed by 10 points.

In the last term the Cougars rallied, aided by Jayden Kegg and Bret Van Groningen who was inspirational with his traditional runs from half back! These two players lifted the Hawks tempo to stage a fight back, unfortunately the team was inaccurate in this term, kicking 1.6 to fall short by five points on the final siren.

Final scores: Kingsley 8.8 – 56, Kalamunda 6.15 – 51

Best players: Bret Van Groningen, Jayden Kegg, Joshua Harris

Most noteworthy: Blair Southcott and Ben Dupont – never stopped trying.

Bruce Glover’s play of the day: (Involved in family duties)

Goals of the day: McLeish 1, Bradley 1, Bowen 2, Harris 1, Southcott 1.

Point to ponder: During this match the number of times the game was held up by the goal and central umpires to make scoring decisions?

Next Saturday: Round 7, Willetton V’s Kalamunda, 2.45 PM Sat. 21 May 2022  Burrendah Reserve.
