Cougar Reserves win in close Elimination Final!

Elimination Final, 20 August, 2022  Kalamunda V’s Canning Vale at Kingfisher Park in Ballajura

In the mud and slush at Ray Owen oval in round 18 last Saturday, Canning Vale (CV) were victors by 6 points in a thrilling game that left most of the supporters hoarse!

This final between the rivals was no different, and the coaching staff and spectators finished up with sore throats again, the only difference being the score, which the Cougars won by 5 points!

Despite the fine conditions, this was a low scoring affair with both sides struggling to penetrate their opponent’s defense. This led to some very congested play in the mid-field resulting in the teams kicking only one goal each for the quarter. Fortunately the Cougars led as they managed to kick a point during the term!

In the second quarter CV’s more physical players started to take advantage of the congestion kicking 2.1 to the Cougars single goal.

Coach Andy Mann would have urged his team to regain their composure at half time and improve their disposal, as much of it in the first half had resulted in turn-overs putting extra pressure on our hard working backs.

With improvement in disposal in the third quarter, the Cougars were able to bring their big men into the game. Lachlan Ebsary who had kicked a goal in the second continued to provide a focal point for tiger Morris and Ryan Steers, who were starting to have an influence on the game. Ethan Carrington who had been playing well in the first half continued his good form and kept forcing the ball into the forward line.

At three quarter time the Cougars had worked their way into the lead by 7 points through goals from Austin Leaver and Ryan Steers.

The last quarter turned into a titanic struggle with players from both sides throwing themselves into the game. Leo lambert set the Cougars up with a quick goal at the start and with their midfield getting on top they were able to deliver accurately to Lachlan Ebsary who kicked another two goals to keep the pressure on CV.

This was heart stopping stuff and it seemed as though the quarter was an hour long, however the Cougars prevailed and ran out winners!
