As Time goes by …
Up in the hills of the never-never,
The faded flag of the Kookaburra flies,
There in the nets of the never-never,
Here’s where the clubs old-boys try,
Recovering the skills of a by-gone era,
Lost in life, as time goes by.
Here the club’s old sons now keeping,
Tales of premierships fast receding,
Knowing these deeds are beyond and repeating,
In current battles with old limbs creaking!
Where brown summers and pain await them,
They struggle to each season’s end,
Knowing their sons won’t follow their leading,
Despite the promise to make team friends.
Selectors now face difficult gambles,
With captains caught-up in a pre-match rambles,
Seeking teams with all round balance,
While hoping to avoid the selection malice.
Alas our youngsters have abandoned the cause,
Citing team efforts, they regard as a bore,
While attendance at training, they claim makes them sore!
So available for selection, we see them no more,
With fast cars and lady’s, they seek now to score!
And as for the flags, they now look quite poor,
Hanging in dust, on the change-room back door.
Watto!
