Grand Final 2024, Swan View V’s Pickering Brook
After demolishing Chidlow by 100 points in the Preliminary Final, Swan View became ‘red hot’ favorites to win the Grand Final against the Hawks. Indeed, they were so sure of winning the GF they had the win published in the West Australian newspaper a couple of days before the match was played!
Swan View had their revenge in this final as they had been beaten by Chidlow by 55 points in the Preliminary Final in 2023. This season their form has been remarkable as they have shared the top spot on the HFA ladder all season, with last years premiers the Hawks.
A large crowd attended this game in bright and sunny conditions and saw the Swans get off to a quick start booting the first goal and looking sharp with clean ball movement that took the Hawks by surprise. However, as the quarter progressed the Hawks worked their way into the game by kicking 5 goals to the Swans 2 to lead by 18 points at the first break.
During the second term the Swans increased their tackling intensity and began to reduce the effectiveness of the Hawks mid field supply to their forwards who could only manage 1.2 for the quarter, while the Swans kicked 3.2 to trail by 6 points at half time.
Hawks coach Ben Armstrong would have been concerned at half time as his team were beginning to lose their composure under pressure, with poor disposal while the Swans were beginning to gain confidence and play run-on football.
This poor form continued during the third term as the Hawks began to struggle against the physical pressure the Swans were applying, only managing to kick 1.2 while the Swans went on their merry way to boot 6.4 and set themselves up for a win.
The final quarter proved very disappointing for the Hawks supporters who were hoping their team could bridge the 26 points they trailed by at three quarter time. The Hawks teamwork completely failed in this term and they resorted to playing ‘paddock football’ while the Swans went on to kick 6.2 while the Hawks could only manage 2 goals to lose by 52 points.
Final scores: Swan View 17.10 – 112, Pickering Brook 9.6 – 60
