Round 2 Semi-Final C1 grade Baldivis V’s Kalamunda 28/8/21 at Baldivis
This game was always going to be a difficult encounter for the Cougars as Baldivis had been on top of the C1 ladder all season.
To make it more difficult these teams had not played against one another this season due to Covid restrictions.
Baldivis joined the Perth Football League (WAAFL) this year from the Peel Football League and have enjoyed immediate success this competition.
They are favored to be promoted to the WAAFL ‘B’ grade competition in season 2022.
The first half of the game saw Kalamunda match Baldivis, who appeared to be more mature and taller than the Cougars. This was achieved by hard tackling and swift ball movement into the forward line.
Tyler Caddy playing in the center was having a ‘purple patch’ assisted by Josh Harris and Trent Pottinger who were working hard to retain possession in the middle.
Our forwards were playing in front of their opponents and with Josh Touchell and Bret van Groningen marshalling the backline they repelled constant attacks, by their taller opponents.
To their credit the Cougars were only 5 points behind at half time; 4.7 to the Brumbies 5.6
In the third quarter Baldivis started to exert their influence by kicking 5.3 to our 1.4 and with the loss of ‘Dutchie’ van Groningen, the backline started to lose composure and with that, accuracy in delivery downfield.
In the last quarter the height and strength of Baldivis had taken its toll and they ran on to kick 6.3 to our Cougars 1.1
At the awards presentation after the game at home coach Fare praised our young team saying at no stage during this game did they give up and they now would have a better understanding of competition in the higher grades of WAAFL .
Final scores: Baldivis: 16.10 – 106, Kalamunda: 5.12 – 42
Best players: Josh Touchell, Tyler Caddy, Josh Harris, Trent Pottinger
Best wishes to Tyler Caddy, injured in the final quarter.
Next Saturday: Round 3 Preliminary Finals, Colts: Kalamunda V’s Canning Vale 10.30 am, C1: Kalamunda V’s Melville 2.30 pm – at Ray Owen Oval.
