Round 14, Carlisle V’s Kalamunda at Carlisle Oval

For the second week in a row the Cougars hung on in a tight last quarter to win by 5 points!

Players and supporters were holding their breath in the dying minutes of this game as Carlisle desperately tried to clear the ball from their backline, after Blair Southcott had kicked a superb goal from the boundary to put Kalamunda in front.

The Cougars in these last minutes must have realised they were going to spoil Daniel Brescacin’s 150th To their credit they sealed Carlisle up, trapping the ball in our forward line, a fundamental tactic our team has not performed well this season.

We would like to congratulate ‘DB’ on his 150th it’s a worthy achievement by a great player for our club!

My spy told me, that Carlisle had lost several players due to injury and this looked to be the case in the first quarter as our players dominated kicking 5.2 to Carlisle’s 2.1

However, in the second quarter our Cougars concentration lapsed and their intensity to gain and hold possession fell away allowing Carlisle to kick 4 goals. to our one leaving us 3 points up at half time.

Kalamunda had also lost key players due to injury and sickness, however we saw the welcome return of Tyler Caddy and Ryan Newbold.

Tyler played a very serviceable game and Ryan provided the big target in the forward line we have been lacking in previous games. Ryan will benefit from this outing with some extra training in forward disposition.

During the third quarter Carlisle were showing a great deal of initiative which was commented on by the spectators who said you could hear the Carlisle players helping one another while there was nothing to be heard from our players. This was clearly demonstrated on a number of occasions, when Carlisle players took marks in and around our players completely unopposed!

Our kicking and handball accuracy left a lot to be desired in this quarter also.

At the end of the third quarter Carlisle were a point in front, therefore coach Fare decided that some severe ‘encouragement’ was required if our team was going to win this game!

The last quarter turned out to be a ‘slugging match’ as both sides strived to gain ascendency. Our backline led by Jarrod Brockbernd kept Carlisle out, only allowing them 1.1 for the term, while our forwards struggled hard to keep the ball in our forward line only kicking 1.1 until ‘Southy’ kicked the winner with only minutes to go.

Bruce Glover a great supporter of the club and one of the contributors to this blog said he nearly had a heart attack in the last quarter and is hoping for higher winning margins in the future. His observations from the first quarter are included.

Southy opened the major scoring with a great sliding mark and goal.

The team worked together very well in this quarter with thoughtful and well initiated leads aiding DB’s 2 great goals and 1 by Trent.

Our backline managed to hold Carlisle to 2 goals and drove a number of their players right out of the game.

The unassuming play of the quarter was by Jarrod Brockbernd who when falling, managed to get a last minute right hand sweep of the ball to  a team member where the flankers on the far side communicated/combined  very well to deliver the ball to our forward line, this superb passage of play equalled Southy’s match winning mark and ball steerage of the closing minutes. Bruce Glover

Final scores: Kalamunda: 10.7 – 67,  Carlisle: 9.8 – 62

Best players: Team effort – special mention for our younger players who never stopped trying!  Ed C. was full of praise for our young players at the end of this game.
