Chidlow too strong for ‘Hawks’ in HFA Round 2

HFA Round 2, 2022 Chidlow V’s Pickering Brook at Chidlow Oval

In this round, Pickering Brook were hoping to avenge their Grand Final defeat against Chidlow last season by 58 points.

Unfortunately, this did not happen, and the Hawks lost by 32 points.

The Cougars used their superior kicking and handballing skills to lead by 21 points at the end of the first quarter, forcing the Hawks to play ‘catch-up’ footy for the rest of the game.

The Hawks worked hard to force the ball into their forward line during the first half, however skill errors enabled the Chidlow backs led by Reece Forbes, to continually clear the ball.

At half time the Hawks were only 13 points behind the Cougars and look set to make up ground as Jack Giancono and the Outridge boys were playing well led by ruckman Rowan Arnott.

At three quarter time there was only 14 points difference between the teams and Pickering Brook looked at that stage they could get up and win the contest.

However, the run and big bodies of Chidlow started to have an influence on the game with ‘Barbie’ Malaby and ‘Buzz’ McKinlay helping to break through the Hawks back-line to kick 5.4, to put the game out of reach.

This was despite the efforts of the Hawks hard working backline including Mitch Shilling and Hayden Della-Franca who had run themselves ragged  trying to keep Chidlow at bay throughout the match.

The Hawks will look forward to the return of several players for their next match against Gidgegannup at home, to get their season back on track.

Final score: Chidlow 17.13 – 115, Pickering Brook 12.11 – 83

Best players: Jack Giancono, Rowan Arnott, Hayden Della-Franca
