‘Commitment’ – one of the 5 C’s, in Australian Football.

‘Commitment’ – what does it really mean?

The ability to stay committed to the Objectives of your club without being distracted by the tasks put before you is crucial as a player, as the road to success is pitted with potholes and disappointments.

There will be inevitably times when all may seem lost with defeats and criticism coming from those inside the club and those outside the playing group including supporters.

The ability to stay committed to the tasks and not become distracted or diverted is crucial if you are to ride out the storm. This is not to say that it may not be necessary to consider new options and look at alternatives as everyone must be prepared to change. The art is to balance flexibility which should always be present with patience and persistence.

By far the most important tool at the disposal of a coach is to reward players with approval and praise whenever it is earnt. Being ‘present’, interested, positive, sharply focused, and consistent is what this is about.

Coaches should always be looking for ways to reinvent and refresh themselves and better ways to communicate their ideas. Players who stop listening or who are not engaged start to lose their way.

All involved in the team should have to compete and overcome the burden of self- doubt if you are going to be successful. No coach or team knows the outcome of any match or contest in advance – the best teams can be beaten!

For many teams it is their apprehensions that provides the fuel for outstanding competitiveness.

The other side of this is the paralyzing inertia of doubt that can make players risk-averse and indecisive. The battle between belief and doubt is fought every time we compete against worthy opponents and it’s an ever-present obstacle to overcome.

The greatest win the battle most of the time, but sometimes all of us fall short. When that occurs, the best competitors learn how to face the reality and continue, on and upward.

Commitment demands three things for success : preparation, preparation, and preparation to build confidence throughout a club and develop winning strategy and tactics for success.

The Cougars at this stage of the season must now ask themselves, do they have the physical, mental resources and commitment to go on.
