Cougars back to Earth! …

Round 6, Kalamunda V’s Mosman Park at Ray Owen Reserve

The Cougars after a tough game against Melville in round 5 would have been on high alert for this game against Mosman Park currently sitting in 4th position on the C1 ladder. The ‘Mossies’ would have been keen to beat the Cougars as they would have recovered from their 108-point drubbing by Melville in round 3, to beat Jandakot and Ballajura easily in the last two rounds.

From the first quarter it was apparent the Mossies were keen to avenge the 166 point defeat their Reserves side suffered against the Cougar reserves in their lead up to the main game.

Once again, the Cougars got off to a slow start with the Mossies kicking the first two goals of the match with quick forward entries from the ball toss. When the Cougars decided to attack, they were frustrated by the Mossies defence setting up a chain of loose players to move the ball quickly into their forward line, where their captain Steve Wilby booted two goals.

Cougars captain Trent Pottinger and full forward Ethan Abraham kicked a goal each to give the team a 2 point advantage at quarter time, however there was a growing concern that the skill level around the ground and in the ruck left a lot to be desired.

A moment of quiet reflection?

The start of the second quarter was a repeat of the first, with the Cougars unable to break free from the Mossies determination to play the game on their terms. It wasn’t until the end of the quarter when the Cougars started to demonstrate they were the top team in the competition, allowing Kade Mc Keown, Tyler Mouritz and Ethan Abraham to score through some positive team play to finish 7 points in front.

Some ‘Catch-up’ footy!

The Cougars must have ignored anything their coach said to them at the half time break and had a snooze instead. They came out in the third term and allowed their competitors to kick 8 goals to their single goal!

This placed the Mossies in a very comfortable position to win the match and despite the Cougars playing ‘catch-up’ footy again in the last quarter, they could not bridge the gap and lost by 9 points.

This match should be a ‘Wake-Up’ call for some of the participants in this game, as it’s not going to get any easier as the season progresses.

They should now start thinking about how their going to improve their game as there are players in the reserves side who have played C1 football and would be only too willing to step up!
