Round 2, 9 April 2022 (C1) Jandakot V’s Kalamunda
This was the first away game for the season and started well for the Cougars as they led by 27 points at the first break, with the advantage of a strong southerly wind.
The quarter saw with quick ball movement by both sides however the Cougars backline stood firm and despite missing ace backman Jarrod Brockbernd they kept Jandakot’s score to 8 points.
In the second quarter with the use of the wind Jandakot rallied and kicked 2.3 to our two points to close the difference to 14 points at half time.
The Cougars must have lost their concentration over the break as they came out and began to play ‘paddock’ footy in the third. they became bogged down on the changeroom flank with poor kicking between the half back and half forward lines which enabled their taller opponents to take marks and repel attacks.
With growing confidence Jandakot became more determined in this quarter and kicked 2.3 into the strong wind while the Cougars could only manage 1.2 for the quarter, leaving them 9 points up at the break.
One of the main elements of defense the cougars will learn from this quarter is the danger of kicking the ball out of the backline in to the opponents scoring flank!
Coach Trenberth must have stressed at three quarter time, the need for the young cougars to regain their composure and take care with their disposal as they were now kicking against the wind.
The cougars rallied for him, however the determination of Jandakot and the strong breeze saw Jandakot kick 2.1 for the term while our boys could only manage 2 points to be beaten by a point!
Final scores: Jandakot 7-9 – 51, Kalamunda 6.14 – 50
Most noteworthy: Jack Cipro in his first game, Jackson Bowen, Vlas Kailis and Brendyn Mcleish.
BG’s player of the day: Jacob Jennings who repelled many Jandakot attacks!
