Cougars fall short in the Slush!

Round 18, 13 August, 2022  Kalamunda V’s Canning Vale

In round nine this season the Cougars were victorious winning by 33 points, unfortunately the win was soured by serious injuries to goal sneak Max Bradley and wingman Joel Peters.

It was evident from the first quarter that Canning Vale who are sitting in third spot on the ladder were seeking revenge for this defeat as they were full of determination from the start of the game.

Canning Vale demonstrated in round nine they were a physically stronger side than our Cougars, however in the fine conditions the Cougars aided by some fierce tackling and superior fitness won the day.

This was not to be in this round, as our team struggled to make any headway in the appalling conditions kicking 1 goal to CV’s 1.2 in the first quarter.

A ‘cloud-burst’ during the reserves game had turned Ray Owen Oval into a swamp and the game into a mad scramble to take possession of the ball and do anything effective with it!

CV due to their physicality, realised they had the Cougars measure at this stage. They began to play proper wet weather football by getting in front of their opponents and directing kicks at chests instead of anywhere as the Cougars did. This resulted in their lead of 14 points at the half time break.

At times during the quarter, it was difficult to pick who the players were as they were covered in slush and their numbers blotted out. The only way we could distinguish Josh Harris, who played a superb game, was through his blond hair!

In the third, the strong bodies of CV continued to brush our lighter players aside to go on to kick 3.1 to the Cougars 1.3 and once again highlighting the shortage of a big-bodied target in our full forward zone.

Coach Trenberth urged his players to play one-on-one in the final quarter and use the corridor to goal. He insisted they tighten up across the center to prevent CV’s run-on, however the damage was done and despite the desperate efforts of Ben Bowness and Giacomo Paduano to provide some late opportunities, the Cougars could only kick 1.3 to CV single goal.

Final scores: Kalamunda 3.7 – 25, Canning Vale 7.4 – 46

Best Players: Josh Harris, Ben Bowness, Giacomo Paduano

Goals: Trent Pottinger 1, Ben Holman 1, number ‘blotted out’ 1

Most noteworthy: Rhys Cushing – made mistakes but never stopped trying

Bruce Glover reporting:

Despite the appalling conditions some great marks were taken. In the second quarter a great defensive mark by Lachlan Harty and in the third a good grab by Blair Southcott. In the last a nice mark by Ethan Faulds. More chest marks would have been desirable but the conditions were against us!

One to remember: Kalamunda V’s Canning Vale Round 17, 7 August, 2021

In this game veteran forward Daniel Brescacin had a ‘day out’ kicking seven goals at Ray Owen in wet and slippery conditions. (We could have done with this bloke in round 18)
