Cougars good win; but not without cost!

Round 9, 11 June 2022 (C1) Canning Vale V’s Kalamunda

This was the long-awaited round of the season, to see who would beat Canning Vale who were sitting on top of the C1 ladder.

The Cougars were victorious in this game winning by 33 points however the win was soured by serious injuries to goal sneak Max Bradley and wingman Joel Peters.

Fortunately the weather was fine throughout this game, although ground conditions at Clifton Reserve were very slippery, however the Cougars adapted well and kicked 6.1 in the first quarter to Canning Vale’s 2.2

During this quarter they had 5 separate goal kickers with Josh Harris kicking 2 out of a bag of 5 for the game!

Another feature of this quarter was the fierce tackling applied by the Cougars that restricted Canning’s ability to steady and direct their disposal. At quarter time, coach Trenberth urged his players to keep their pressure up and not allow Canning to break away.

However, in the second quarter despite Chris Hegarty’s dominance in the ruck, Canning Vale took control and with low trajectory passes to their forwards, kicked 5 goals to the Cougars 3.1 to trail by 13 points at half time.

The third was a hard slugging affair with both sides showing the reason they were ladder leaders. The Cougars had several opportunities to score in this quarter, however their poor disposal in the forward line reduced them to kicking the same score as Canning at 4.2 apiece.

In the final term It looked as though Canning’s fitness was fading under the hostile pressure the Cougars were administering as they began arguing with the umpires and giving away 50 meter penalties in their back line.

This allowed the Cougars to take complete control of the game by kicking 4.3 to Canning’s 1.1 It was a great win against fancied opponents, a team effort only soured by the injuries to Joel and Max.

Final scores: Canning Vale 12.4 – 76, Kalamunda 17- 7 – 109

Best players: the ‘Usual Suspects’

Most noteworthy: Chris Hegarty’s ruck work, Ben Dupont ‘A’ grade defending, Tiger Morris superb!

Bruce Glover’s plays of the day (POD):

Team: First quarter about 5 players with great positioning and passing moving the ball forward with superb precision to score.

Individual: Josh Harris who appeared to be running with the flight of the ball but marked the kick out and sent it back for a goal!

Mark of the Day (MOD): Trent’s 4th quarter forward pocket effort.

Scrag of the Day (SOD): (new category) 1st Quarter: Mitch Massam grabbed a dashing opponents jumper with one hand and while being “dragged” along managed to retard the opponent till help arrived and we took possession and drove the ball forward, a great piece of 1 % football, ‘I hope you still have all your finger- nails Mitch’.

Mention of the Day: Chris Hegarty’s dominance of center hit outs with superb timing, great to watch.

The following is a tribute by Alex Haight to Chris Frawley on his 150th and sum’s it up from all of us at the Cougars.

Congratulations to the warrior Chris ‘Frawlsy’ Frawley who will play his 150th game for the mighty Kalamunda Cougars this weekend at Ray Owen.

After short stints at Queens Park, Perth and Kenwick, in 2010 he decided to come play at Kalamunda. He knew pretty quickly that this was the right place to be and has formed many great friendships over the years.

This goal sneak has pushed through many injuries over his career and has the ability to keep getting back up and go again. In 2017 he suffered a badly broken ankle in the pre-season and was told it would be difficult to get back and play. In true ‘Frawlsy’ fashion he knuckled down, persevered and not only got back, but also managed to qualify and play finals that year. A truly amazing effort and was fittingly awarded the Alan Price most courageous award that year.

Chris has led the thirds team as captain on three occasions and has been a great servant to the club on and off the field for many years. He is truly one of the great characters and a much-loved member of our great club. Well done on your achievement and all the best for Saturday to the one and only #3 Chris Frawley!
