Round 10, Kalamunda V’s Ocean Ridge 03:05 PM, Sat, 17 Jun 23, at Ray Owen Reserve
The Cougars were looking forward to this encounter with the Ocean Ridge as in round 1 they had been comprehensively beaten by 40 points, their highest losing margin this season.
The Eagles were sitting in 8th position on the PFL ‘B’ grade ladder, 4 points behind with a better percentage than the Cougars, indicating this was going to be a tough game to win.
As indicated, this turned out to be a very tough game as the Cougars trailed all afternoon and finished up getting beaten by 70 points!
This margin may have been greater however our backline led by Lachlan Harty, Bret van Groningen and Ben Dupont who feature in our best players list, were outstanding in trying to stop the Ocean Ridge avalanche!
The worst feature of this game was the inability of the Cougars to ‘man-up’ and having to chase their opponents for three quarters, then with fading energy watch the Eagles kick 6 goals in the last term without being able to respond.
Not a great deal can be said about this game other than our young Cougars were taught a football lesson by a well drilled outfit playing with commitment and skill.
Final scores: Kalamunda 4.5 – 29, Ocean Ridge 14.15 – 99
Best players: Lachlan Harty, Bret van Groningen and Ben Dupont
Goals: Jackson Bowen 1, Kade McKeown 1, Kyle Murray 1, Justin Simpson 1
Special comments: Injured Vice Captain Josh Harris, ‘Young crew – long journey’ President Andrew Mann, ‘Off field terrific, on field not so good!’ Merchandise Manager Matthew Yaksich, ‘We must stay in B grade!’ Football Director Ed Considine, ‘We must stay in B grade!’
Mark(s) of the Day:
In the first quarter Oliver Adriano and Lachlan Harty took two strong defensive marks and in the third there was a magnificent leap and grab by Brett van Groningen riding high above his opponent. Then in the last, Tiger a ‘delicate’ one hander!
Play of the Day: In the third, Jackson gathered the ball on the wing and passed it across to Justin on the outer wing who commenced a forward thrust with a long kick to Trent who passed the ball back to Jackson (again) who scored! The intermediate passes had allowed time for the fast-moving Jackson to repositioned himself in the forward line and score from his very own “instigation”. A superb cameo of accurate amateur football that would have drawn grand applause at any AFL game, thanks Gents.
Inconspicuous Play of the Day: In the third, after an indecisive centre clearance Tiger gave the ball a gentle tap to Trent, who turned and drove the ball well forward.
