Cougars have ‘One of those days’

Round 18, Cockburn Lakes, V’s Kalamunda, at Anning Park.

Cockburn Lakes who are sitting in second spot on the C1 ladder, would have been on high alert and ready for revenge against the Cougars who beat them by 22 points in round 9 at Ray Owen Oval.

The first quarter started at a frantic pace with both teams trying to gain an advantage with a stiff breeze blowing across the ground, making scoring difficult. The quarter ended with the Warriors leading by 3 points.

It appeared that the Warriors were a different side to the one that played the Cougars in round 9 at home as they seemed to have taller more physical players on the ground.

In the second term the Warriors took complete control of the game kicking 5.3 to the Cougars single point. The Cougars started to run second with poor disposal that was capitalized on by the Warriors big men in the air, while many of our lighter bodied players were brushed off the ball in general field play.

STOP PRESS …
All guts and determination!

During this quarter Max Fasolo was concussed and taken to hospital which led to the team losing its composure and giving away free kicks and a 50-metre penalty.

Max pictured here in hospital, looks as though he is OK, however will need to take things easy for a while!

Coach Bolton would have stressed at half time the Cougars needed to regain their composure and control of disposal as the signs of defeat were beginning to loom.

In the third, the Cougars steadied and kicked 4.2 to the Warriors 2.4 with great efforts from our backs led by veteran Bret van Groningen who seemed to have the ball on a string, running forward to kick his 50th goal, in a long career with our club!

However, the Warriors steadied in the last quarter and their physical approach was beginning to have effect the confidence of our younger players, who became reluctant to lead to the ball carrier. This provoked a loss of kicking accuracy, with the Warriors quick to turn the ball over to their forwards, with big man Jacob Plunkett kicking his 5th goal to finish the match.

This was a disappointing end to the home and away season leaving the Cougars in 4th position on the ladder, leading to an elimination final at home next week against the Thornlie ‘Lions’.
