Cougars make hard work of ‘T’ Pott’s 200th.

Round 11, 25 June 2022 (C1) Kalamunda V’s Jandakot

This round was dedicated to club legend and team captain Trent Pottinger who was playing his 200th game for the Cougars.

During this time he has won many awards for his skill and courage and has been an inspiration to his teammates and our club.

The Cougars won this game by the significant margin of 46 points. Spectating from the far boundary, I felt the Cougars received a very poor return for their efforts as they dominated play for most of the day only to see their mid-field work break down in an uncoordinated forward line.

The first quarter started in fine fashion with returning CHF Scott Foley booting a goal from 50 meters out in the first minute of the term.

From then on however, the path to goal became ‘crowded’ with the Cougars struggling to kick goals, only adding another 1.5 to Jandakot’s single goal for the term.

The most disappointing aspect of this term was a serious injury to Jarrod Brockbernd that may see him sidelined for some time.

In the second quarter Coach Trenberth must have provided some ‘encouragement’ as the cougars steadied and kicked 4.3 to Jandakot’s 2.1. Scott Foley kicked another and Lachlan Ebsary returning from the reserves kicked one from a superb lead. Blair Southcott who was having a ‘purple patch’ during this term booted two and was disappointed missing another two, that he would have normally kicked.

In the third term the Cougars decided to ‘Shift the Axis of Play,’ by deciding to play ‘paddock football’ up and down the clubroom flank resulting in another 2.5 being kicked to Jandakot’s 2 single goals.

In the last quarter ‘the usual suspects’ came to the fore and held up a resurgent Jandakot, who had kicked the first goal of the quarter and began to apply plenty of pressure on our backline. Fortunately, our backs stood firm and forced Jandakot to kick 5 points to end the game. The Cougars replied with 3.2 for this term.

The Cougars are now at a stage in the season where they need to prevent any more serious injury to players. Communication must be improved, as in this match players were not nominating themselves when preparing to mark or contest the ball resulting in them spoiling one another or leaving their opponents uncontested.

Final scores: Jandakot 5 . 5 – 35,   Kalamunda  11 . 15 – 81

Best players: the ‘Usual Suspects’

Goals: Blair Southcott, 2 Scott Foley 2, 1 each to Vlas Kailis, Jack Cipro, Josh Harris, Kevin McGrath & Lachlan Ebsary

Most noteworthy: Rhys Cushing, who shut-down one of Jandakot’s key play-makers on the half back flank and Chris Hegarty who for most of the match had to contend with two opponents!

Bruce Glover’s plays of the day (POD):

Mark of the Day:  Third Quarter.   Scott Foley’s courageous mark.

Dash of the Day:   Fourth Quarter, Brett  van Groningen, a great dash from Centre half back to Centre half forward finishing off with a nice little “chip” pass to Blair.

Next Saturday: round 12, Carlisle V’s Kalamunda, 2 July,2022
