Round 7, 21 May 2022 (C1) Willetton V’s Kalamunda
After a disappointing loss to Kingsley in round 6 the Cougars returned to the winning list to beat the Willetton ‘Blues’ by 63 points at Burrendah Reserve.
In a slow start to the first quarter the Cougars could only manage to kick 1.2 to their opponents 2 points. This was brought about by the physical pressure the Blues used, which forced the Cougars to attack around the flanks. This tactic suited the Blues backs and enabled them to work the ball out of trouble.
On other occasions the Cougars ‘bombed’ the ball into the forward line enabling the Blues backs led by tall defender Lachlan Kleppe, who was playing as a spare man in defence, to mark and clear the ball from the zone.
In the second quarter the cougars started in the same vein, before regaining their composure to kick 4.2 to the blues 2.3. Joel Peters led the way with an inspirational ‘long bomb’ followed by Ben Bowness, Blair Southcott and Lachlan Ebsary with a goal each.
In the third, the ‘Usual Suspects’ who had been working their butts off since the first bounce, took complete control of the midfield delivery and provided plenty of opportunities for our forwards to kick 4.3 to the Blues 1.1 putting a 38 point stranglehold on the game.
In the last term it was apparent the Blues were starting to tire, as the Cougars ran over the top of them kicking 6.1 before their 2 late goals. Jackson Bowen chipped in with 2 goals with Josh Harris kicking his third for the match and Blair Southcott, Lachlan Ebsary and Jarrod Brockbernd with one each.
Final scores: Willetton 5.6 – 36, Kalamunda: 15.9 – 99
Best players: the usual suspects
Most noteworthy: Blair Southcott, Jackson Bowen, Ben Holman
Bruce Glover’s play of the day: (Involved in Electoral duties)
Goals of the day: Harris 3, Ebsary 3, Bowen 2, Peters 2, Southcott 2,
Points to ponder: the number of times Willetton were able to break out of our forward line and find team-mates who were unattended!
