Round 6, Kalamunda V’s Canning Vale at Ray Owen Oval
The Kalamunda ‘Cougars’ would have been keen to atone for their loss by 8 points against Mosman Park last week, by beating the Canning Vale ‘Cougars’ at home at Ray Owen.
Canning Vale had only won 1 game leading to this round, however the Cougars knew they could not take this game lightly as their opponents had some very strong individual players who had been playing C1 grade after being promoted from C2 in 2020.
The Kalamunda boys started the first term with a blitz of 7 goals with Leo Lambert, Josh Harris and Tyler Mouritz kicking 2 goals each with Jackson Bowen chipping in with 1. Canning could only manage 1.1 as our Cougars were on fire!
The second quarter started in the same vein with Kala kicking 4 goals however Canning began to apply some pressure with 3 goals to stop the dominance of Jack Amos in the ruck and our midfield led by Tiger Morris and Zac Meloncelli.
Leading by 44 points at half time coach Bolton would have stressed the need to maintain concentration in the third term and continue the ball movement that had dominated Cannings efforts in the first half.
Cannings coach must have also provided plenty of ‘encouragement’ for his players at half time as they came out determined to stop our Cougars run. This was achieved through their experienced and physical players who slowed the pace of the game resulting in some very ugly football with Kala kicking 2.3 for the quarter and Canning 1,1
In the final term Canning continued to persevere by using their physicality to outscore the Cougars by 15 points, this through accurate passing to their forwards, including big Ethan Abraham who finished the match with 4 goals and was a constant threat throughout the game.
Nevertheless, Kala ran out winners by 47 points and will look forward to challenging Carlisle next week who surprisingly beat Mosman Park by 26 points in this round.

A big crowd attended this Mother’s Day clash at Pickering Brook expecting a close game in perfect conditions for Aussie rules footy.
A tribute was paid by both teams before the start of the match for a well known and respected player who had recently lost his life due to a condition that all sporting clubs are trying to eliminate.
The Hawks got off to a quick start in the first quarter kicking 5.4 to the Swans 2.2 with Mick Brescacin at full forward showing he was going to be a handful for the Swans backs with his strong leading and marking.
Brad Jetta who had moved from the Hawks to play with the Swans this season showed his usual flair in roving and was involved in a fierce tussle with Steve Caccetta and Jayden Kegg throughout the match.
In the second term the Hawks started to show their ascendency with run-on football and sure ball handling to lead the quarter by 38 points at half time. Ruckman Jackson Shilling was also winning in the ruck and providing plenty of opportunities for his mid-fielders to move the ball forward.
In the third term the Swans attempted to draw back the lead the Hawks had, only to find their 2.1 was quickly held. The Hawks skill and strength in their backline led by Mitch Shilling, and Corey Christensen set up attacks for their forwards, with Bret Wolfenden and Jamie Soklich kicking 6 goals between them to match Mick Brescacin’s 6 as the match reached its conclusion.
To their credit the Swans continued to battle through to the end, however the Hawks with their experience and composure continued to draw away and finished up winning by 56 points giving Swan View a lot to think about for the future.
