‘Cougars win by the skin of their teeth; Again!

Round 12, 2nd July 2022 (C1) Carlisle ‘Cougars’ V’s Kalamunda ‘Cougars’
This round was played at Carlisle Reserve last Saturday to celebrate NAIDOC week.
The events included a Welcome to Country, a Smoking Ceremony and a  dance performance by members of the ‘Midm Marr Dreaming’ a Noongar dance group who share Noongar culture.
My spy told me that Carlisle ‘Cougars’ who were fourth spot on the C1 ladder were anxious to avenge their defeat at the hands of our Cougars by 28 points at Ray Owen in round 3 this season.

In the first quarter there was no doubt that our Cougars were going to have a difficult job to beat Carlisle on their home turf.

Carlisle started the game at a frenetic pace moving the ball swiftly into their forward line and it took our Cougars most of the quarter to settle down and match Carlisle to end the quarter at 2.3 each. This was assisted due to great defensive work by our backs.

In the second quarter Carlisle gained complete ascendency with excellent run and carry footy to boot 3.4 to lead our Cougars by 15 points at half time. The loss of Josh Touchell with what appeared to be a serious injury, played a part in the team becoming unbalanced, with poor disposal by hand and foot becoming a feature of our play.

The third quarter was evenly matched once again, with both teams booting 3.3 each! (This even play must have been catching as the reserves game ended in a draw!). Our Cougars once again fell into the trap of playing ‘paddock’ football  on the Carlisle clubroom flank during the quarter and squandered opportunities in the forward area.

Coach Trenberth must have provided some harsh ‘encouragement’ at three quarter time as the team led by ‘the usual suspects’ came out and took complete control of the game, kicking 5.2 to Carlisle’s 1.2 to get over the line by 9 points. Heart attack material for us who watch and report from the far boundary!

 Final scores: Carlisle 9.12 – 66,   Kalamunda 11.9 – 75

Best players: Trent Pottinger, Josh Harris, Ben Holman, Vlas Kailis

Goals: Jackson Bowen 2, Josh Harris 2,  Jack Cipro 2, Kevin McGrath 2

Most noteworthy: Josh Harris, outstanding! (Lizzie Watto’s BOG) Ben Holman, Ethan Faulds  Vlas Kallis and Rhys Cushing.

Bruce Glover’s play’s of the day and an article that appeared in the Echo Newspaper regarding our keen supporter and blog contributor. Congratulations Bruce!

Mark of the Day: Trent’s great leap and grab in the 3rd quarter.

Dash of the Day: second quarter, Adam Brescacin, showing greater acceleration than an Electric Vehicle, Adam overtook a team member gathered the ball and put it through for a goal.

At ¾ time and down by 15 points coach Trenberth told the players that it was “theirs for the taking”, and it was, mainly through a great lift in the players raw determination – great to watch.

Next Saturday: round 13, Kalamunda V’s Hamersley Carine  2.45PM
