Round 15, 23 July, 2022 Kalamunda V’s Kingsley
The Cougars in preparation for this round, would have looked back in retrospect to round 6 at Kingsley Park when they had a surprise loss lost to Kingsley who were in 8th position by 5 points.
In this round there were concerns that that Kalamunda were fielding an undermanned side as there were 11 changes compared to the side that played Kingsley in round 6.
As it turned out our concerns were unfounded as the Cougars turned on a superb team performance in wet muddy conditions to defeat Kingsley by 34 points!
The Cougars started well booting 5 goals to Kingsley’s 1 in the first quarter only to see Kingsley rebound in the second to kick 4 straight to our 1.4.
On the boundary it looked as though Kingsley’s physical presence with their big bodies would overwhelm our lighter players. However, this was not to be as Vlas Kallis, Adam Brescacin, Jack Jago and Giacomo Paduano with speed and superb ball skills created many opportunities for the ‘usual suspects’ and their teammates in the horrible conditions.
Braydon Becker, called up to ruck in the absence of Chris Hegarty provided a physical presence in the center duels and around the ground with attacking handball and also featured in the ‘Play of The Day’.
Ben Bowness who was playing his 200th game for the club was prominent with his long kicking and marking. We think he was a bit shy about being carried off at the end of the match, however he deserved everyone’s congratulations. (see Alex’s report in This Weeks Topic)
As mentioned, this was a great team effort brought about by fierce tackling and a full commitment by the new members of this side.
Final scores: Kalamunda: 11.7 – 73, Kingsley 6.3 – 39
Best players: Team effort!
Goals: Josh Harris 3, Trent Pottinger 2, Kevin McGrath 2, Ben Bowness 1 and Rhys Cushing 1
Most noteworthy: Cougars backline who only allowed Kingsley to score (1) one goal after half time!
Bruce Glover’s report: In view of the very wet/muddy conditions, there were many good marks and wet weather plays. My marks of the day went to Kevin McGrath’s 3rd quarter mark and goal and his great 4th quarter grab a delight in the conditions!
My Play of the Day was Braydon Becker’s unassuming mark and handball to Josh Harris resulting in a goal – nice!
