Round 5, 7 May 2022 (C1) Kalamunda V’s High Wycombe
My spy told me High Wycombe had been training very hard during the week for a ‘Derby’ with the Cougars, who had moved to second spot behind Canning Vale on the (C1) ladder.
High Wycombe who are currently on the bottom of the ladder gave a pretty good account of themselves in the first quarter of this game. They didn’t look as though they deserved this position as they defended well and had several scoring opportunities kicking 2-4 to the Cougars 4-5.
They may have kicked more, however our backline stood firm led by Jarrod Brockbernd who was making a welcome return. Reserves player Joshua Davis was called up and made his debut in the ruck as Chris Hegarty and Aaron Hutchison were unavailable through injury.
Josh acquitted himself well against the tall heavy ruck of High Wycombe and provided plenty of opportunities for ‘the usual suspects’, who were having a ‘day-out’ making life miserable for the High Wycombe backs.
At half time the Cougars were 27 points in the lead and it was becoming evident that fitness and a fairly hot day was going to decide the outcome of the match.
In the third quarter Kalamunda kicked 10–3 to High Wycombe’s 2–2 putting the match well out of High Wycombe’s reach.
Skill and fitness then let the Cougars get away to kick 5–5 to 1-2 in the final term, to win by 103 points.
There is not much more to say about this match, other than to prepare well for next weeks game against Kingsley, as they will be ‘up and about’ after their win against Willetton last Saturday.
Final scores: Kalamunda 23-16 – 154 High Wycombe 7-9 – 51
Best players: Jackson Bowen, Max Bradley, Josh Harris
Most noteworthy: Jackson Bowen and Max Bradley, outstanding games.
Bruce Glover’s play of the day: Best communication; last quarter, Ben Bowness after a good mark, heard a whisper behind him from Trent, hand passed, Trent to Jackson Bowen, goal! Superb speed and fluency, thanks gents.
Goals of the day: Hard to go past ‘The Multiple of Six’ by Max Bradley, (surely a tribute to his lost mate). In the 3rd, Trent took a good pass from Scottie and put one through, a beauty from 45 meters on the run!
Congratulations: Reserves player Matt Benson 100 games, a great record to hold in any club! Rhys Cushing 50 games and Tyler McKay who played his 50th against North Beach, well done men!
Next Saturday: Round 6, Kingsley V’s Kalamunda, 2.20 PM Sat. 14 May 2022 Kingsley Park.
