HFA Round 6, 29 May 2022 Pickering Brook V’s Bullsbrook
Pickering Brook’s coach Michael Outridge who had been sick during the week, had another headache to contend with in the selection of the side to play the Saints as the Hawks were missing 7 key players for this match due to injury.
Fortunately, the Hawks this season have reserves to draw on and by winning by 116 points proved the replacements were up to the task!
Not a great deal can be said about this match, other than the young Bullsbrook Saints never stopped trying and at times left the Hawks very frustrated trying to keep the ball in their forward line.
On many occasions throughout the match the Saints broke through the Hawks forward defense to run and carry the ball well into their forward line, only to ruin their good work with poor kicking into their forward line and at set shots for goal.
There was no lack of enthusiasm and plenty of pace in the young Saints efforts and with maturity and practice they will not languish in second bottom position on the HFA ladder in the future.
As far as the Hawks are concerned, communication and protection of the ball carrier must be improved, to prevent the injuries the team is experiencing.
Throughout this match there were many opportunities to ‘switch-play’, which were ignored or unseen by players resulting in periods of ‘paddock’ footy which ultimately results in hard knocks and injury.
Apart from these few blemishes, the team- work improved as the game progressed and so did the old 50 game war-horse Rowan (Arny) Arnott who was given the chance to run through his banner at the end of the game!
Final scores: Pickering Brook 21.15 – 141, Bulsbrook: 3.7 – 25
Best Players: Mc Quoid, Armstrong, Baines.
Goals: Armstrong 8, Brescasin 6
Special mention by coach: Team effort and the old ‘war horse’ in his 50th
