‘Cougars’ Season 2022

From the far boundary…

Cougar Colts Premiers, Celebrating Three Seasons in a Row!

Season 2022 has been a highly satisfying and successful one for the Cougars, with the C1 side ‘runners-up’ in the Grand Final thereby qualifying to play in the league ‘B’ grade next season.
Our two Colts sides had great seasons, with the IDC team winning it’s Grand Final and the BJC team reaching the finals.
To add to this, the C1 Reserves played in the finals and the E1 grade ‘runners-up’ in their Grand Final.

The E2’s and the ladies side were not as successful this season, however they were great supporters of our club and had a lot of fun! The six men’s and the lady’s sides all finished the season with great enthusiasm, looking forward to season 2023.

During this season the club had several players who reached milestones in their football careers. These players are featured in Alex Haight’s reports in this blog.
We would also like to thank Don Benson for his great photos of our milestone players which enhanced the posts and pages of our weekly reports.

Some outstanding achievements

The ‘Far Boundary’ crowd wish to congratulate Trent Pottinger and Josh Harris, Captain and Vice Captain of our C1 team! They had an outstanding season with former Cougar Steve Caccetta at High Wycombe running third in the Association medal count. We wish them well in their future football careers.

Club veteran Daniel Brescacin won the E1 Association  medal for the Fairest and Best player. DB’s season was outstanding being a commiseration for the E1’s after being on top of the ladder all season, then losing the Grand Final!

There were times when we wished DB was playing in the forward line for the C1’s!

We also wish to congratulate our coaching and management staff, for their hard work and dedication in organising seven teams during the season. Their efforts and knowledge of our great game would have helped our young players, pictured below, win fairest and best awards for our club.

Our President Andy Mann and his committee working in conjunction with  the football direction team also deserve a special mention.
Running an organisation, the size of our club harmoniously and successfully is testament to their hard work and vigilance over a long season.

Their efforts have been made particularly difficult this season as our facilities at Ray Owen Oval have become completely inadequate to house six men’s and the lady’s side.  There is also a possibility our club will add another Colts side to the playing list next season, to cater for the number of young people coming from junior football ranks!

The club desperately needs to upgrade and add to existing change room facilities for home and visiting sides, as well as medical facilities, toilets and umpire’s rooms.
Storage facilities for the seven sides are also completely inadequate with club officials having to store essential equipment and other club material in their own homes!

I believe the upgrading and expansion of the Ray Owen Oval is currently underway by the City of Kalamunda.
This work cannot be delayed any longer as the current surface of the existing oval cannot handle the heavy workload placed upon it by local schools, social groups and our own expanding needs.

During the latter part of the 2022 season the oval became unusable and dangerous to play on, necessitating changes in training venues leading to disruption in the clubs 4 finals campaigns.

Some thoughts for next pre-season
With the entry into the Perth Footy League ‘B’ grade next season, I urge all prospective coaches and assistants to start thinking about our strategic game play and endeavor to plan tactics for ruck, forward and backlines by practicing these tactics during pre-season training sessions.

Alex Haigt, Reporting
Bruce Glover reporting:

Last but not least, we wish to thank Bruce Glover and Alex Haigt for their reports this season. Alex has been recording club events in facebook for a number of years and we are pleased to have him on board to record the club’s history. Bruce writes on the extraordinary feats of players on match days and we look forward to his contributions in 2023!

The Kalamunda Cougars have a lot to look forward to in season 2023!
