One out of Three for the Cougars!

C1 Grand-Final 2022, Kalamunda V’s Hamersley/Carine at Bassendean Oval

The large crowd attendeding the two Grand Final games at Bassendean Oval last Saturday, stayed on to watch the Cougar C1’s after the IDC Colts won their premiership against Hammersley/Carine by 71 points 11.10 – 3.7

Our Colts celebrating 3 Grand Final victories in a row!

Unfortunately, the C1 team could not repeat this meritorious performance and they lost to Hamersley/Carine by 55 points 13.11 – 4.10

It was evident from the start of the match that the Cougars would struggle against the strength and height of the Hamersley Hawks as they did in their last Final Round 2 game at Ray Owen Oval, where the Hawks won by the slender margin of 7 points.

That game was played in atrocious conditions with the wind affecting the players skill levels, leading to the formation of physical pack-play which didn’t suit the Cougars run and carry style of play.

With the weather perfect for this match, our hopes for the Cougars were high and at half time as there was only one goal difference between the two teams with the Hawks leading.

From that point on the game became a debacle as the Cougars did not kick another goal for the rest of the game!

During this term, coach Trenberth made several changes, however the Cougars were missing experienced team members as well as a strong tall counter for the Hawks Stephen Martin at full forward. Martin despite the valiant efforts of Jacob Jennings, kicked 4.5 in the last half to lead the Hawks to victory.

At the other end of the ground the Hawks taller backs repelled all the attacks made by our mid-field during the half.

This was a disappointing end to the game as Hammersley continued to play the run-on and possession game the Cougars had hoped to play by kicking 5.2 in the last quarter to commence their celebrations!

Final scores: Hammersley/Carine 13.10 – 88, Kalamunda 4.10 – 34

Best Players: Josh Harris, Giacomo Paduano, Bret van Groningen and Ben Bowness

Goals: 1 each to Jack Cipro, Josh Harris, Mitch Massam and Scott Foley

Most noteworthy: Jacob Jennings although completely out- bodied, never stopped trying (My selection was to play him at full forward for this match and Scottie at full back!)

(Please look out for our summary of season 2022 to be published shortly in this blog)
Bruce Glover reporting:

Plays of the day: Lachlan Harty’s great clearance in the first quarter and Jackson Bowen’s in the second quarter who outsmarted and out played 3 Hamersley/Carine players to get his kick away.

Mark of the day: Blair Southcott’s double grab  in the second quarter!

Gentlemen, some great pieces/passages of football throughout the season. Thank you.

Michael ‘Vallo’ Valentine in action!

In another disappointing loss our E1 ‘Old boys’ team went down to Collegians in their Grand Final at Gosnells Recreation ground by 28 points. This was a particularly disappointing loss as it was the 3rd Grand Final loss in a row for the Old Boys and may force some of them to ‘Hang up their Boots’ however much credit should go to them in their support for our club and the effort they have made over past seasons. Their coach Michael Valentine who has had to bear this loss over the past three attempts to win a premiership flag, has to be congratulated on the way he has steadfastly stood by his players and encouraged them to play on and support the younger inexperienced colts, who have filled positions throughout the season.

Final scores: Collegians 6.7 – 43, Kalamunda 2.3 – 15
