Congratulations go to Blake Boyss who played his 50th club game for the mighty Kalamunda Cougars against Bullcreek/Leeming at Beasley Reserve.
A reliable defender who reads the play exceptionally well and beats his opponent time and time again. A creative player off half back who shows great poise and is cool, calm and collected with the ball in hand.
Blake started his career at the Cougars in 2020 and after his first two seasons, can already call himself a dual premiership player (both at colts level).
This is an achievement that most would spend their entire career to obtain. He shows a great deal of potential and is an important player for the club’s future having taken the next step up and proven to be a consistent performer at reserves level. I’m sure he is not far away from making a league debut soon.
Well done Boyzy, celebrate the 14 point win against the Bullcreek Bombers and look forward to the future.
Massive congratulations to Kaine Dangerfield who played his 200th game for the mighty Kalamunda Cougars ‘All Stars’ at Ray Owen reserve in round 15.
Kaines first sporting passion was rugby where he played at the Kalamunda Bulls. His quick burst of speed off the mark and change of direction held him in good stead. His ability to shake and break tackles and power through packs made him a player on top of his game. He earned himself the equivalent of a best & fairest at that club one season. Having his name up on the wall, he may at one stage thought that his sporting future remained there. But his great mate Alex Keeffe told him that he should come up the hill and have a go at footy (AFL) and play for the Kalamunda Cougars, where a lot of his mates from school were playing. So he thought sure, why not. So at the age of 22 he thought he would try something different and see where it would take him.
While the two sports have a lot in common there were some specific skills that needed to be learnt. Handballing, the different ways to angle the ball to make it go a certain way when kicking were a few. It took some time to get his head around it but with Bruce Mercer guiding him along the way, he grew in confidence and started to really enjoy it.
In 2010, after a few years of learning the game and the club growing larger in numbers, the footy club decided to have a thirds team for the first time. Alongside his great mate Alex (Beefy) Keeffe, he tore it up and won the inaugural 3rds best & fairest.
2011 brought tragedy and was a very tough year for Kaine and for all at the footy club. The passing of ‘Beefy’ mid year shook everyone to the core. The club decided that the 3rds best and fairest medal will now be named the Alex Keeffe medal in honour of what he meant to the club. Kaine had another strong year that year and played in a grand final against Wembley and came oh so close to winning a flag for his mate Beefy but it wasnt to be. At years end he was again awarded the 3rds best and fairest, newly named Alex Keeffe medal, back to back. But this time it meant a lot more to him. He was also crowned the association best and fairest for the thirds competition.
Since then Kaine has put together some great years, one that comes to mind is in 2016 he kicked 35 goals straight without a miss, a truly exceptional effort. Off the field he has been helping out the club wherever he can with his busy work schedule whether it be as team manager game day or on the committee.
Well done Kaino, to reach 200 games without playing any colts games is a remarkable effort. The determination you’ve shown over the years needs to be applauded.
Congratulations also to Mitch Massam who played his 50th club game for the mighty Kalamunda Cougars against Bullcreek/Leeming in round 15 at Beasley Reserve.
A brave intercepting half back flanker who puts his body on the line often. Has great dash and foot skills rebounding out of defence and can also push up the ground and play through the midfield on the wing.
Came to the club in 2021 and had an outstanding first season playing games for both colts and league. Rewarded with the clubs rising star award at seasons end. He was also was a great contributor to the powerhouse colts side who went all the way to win their second flag in consecutive seasons. Has been a mainstay in the league team since and came close to making it back to back flags, this time at league level. But unfortunately it wasn’t to be, falling to Hamersley Carine at the final hurdle on grand final day.
He is a big part of the club social events and brings great energy and passion on and off the field. Has a tremendous future at the club and I’m looking forward to seeing how his football career unfolds.
Big thank you to Don Benson photography for all his help and providing some amazing photographs.
