“Old” vehicles the Authors have owned: #2

Morris Major Series 1, 1958 Pictured a Morris Major Series 1 (1958). This is similar to the  second car I owned Just after I turned 20.

The one I brought from North Brede Motors in East Vic Park was a single colour ‘Kack’, nevertheless it was a solid reliable vehicle and unlike the ford V8 wasn’t as thirsty!

My mate Rob Moseley had the Austin version of this car which was almost identical to the Morris, whereas the Austin had a column gear shift while mine was a floor shift.

Both cars were powered by BMC-B series engines with Rob’s car having the more powerful 1622cc engine over my 1489cc motor.

We had a lot of fun with these two cars and they served us well until Rob tipped his over on the roof spilling the keg he had in the back seat! Then I got wiped out a week later by a guy who came straight through a stop sign in East Perth Just below the old cemetery.

My car never drove as well after it was repaired and I decided to get rid of it and buy my first sports car. Despite finishing on its roof in the scrubb, Robs car was OK and he continued to drive it for the next couple of years although it stank like a brewery!

From Wikipedia: The Morris Major and Austin Lancer were introduced in March[1] 1958,[2] designated DO1101 and developed from the contemporary Wolseley 1500 and Riley One-Point-Five models [3] then on sale in the United Kingdom. The Major and Lancer, along with the Wolseley 1500[4] were produced at BMC Australia's Victoria Park plant [3] at Zetland in Sydney, Australia and were unique, containing up to 98% local content.
