The elements of success …

Without planned, appropriate, diligent preparation, a team can never feel confident and ready to compete. The most important thing for coaches to do is to plan, conceptualise, organise and supervise that preparation.
Coaches are looking for self-starting performers who can take responsibility for what happens and who fix problems within the team. Without these players the team tends to be too slow-moving, rigid and non-responsive.
Therefore action is required at two levels:
- Automatic and instinctive; and 2. Creative, decisive and flexible.
The greatest obstacle to dynamic action is a mind burdened with irrelevant thoughts the presence of these can be called a state of ‘wavering concentration’.
Note: the state of wavering concentration was an element lacking when the two teams I reported on were defeated in 2022.
Sun Tzu stated that: ‘Diligent preparation avoids the state of ‘wavering concentration’ and provides an accurate assessment of the situation’
He also said: ‘If the calculations made in the temple before a battle indicate victory, it is because careful calculations show that your conditions for battle are more favorable than those of your enemy; if they indicate defeat it is because careful calculations show that conditions for a battle are fewer’. With more careful calculations, one can win, with less one cannot. How much less chance of victory who make no calculations at all? By this means one can foresee the outcome of a battle.
