Protection of the ‘Ball Carrier’

While watching training many players take their eye off the ball once they have disposed of it and run on to their group or cone without bothering to see the result!

In many instances the receiving player has to ‘clean up’ if the disposal is poor.

This is the cardinal sin of Aussie rules footy for the following reasons:
  1. Players who are in habit of doing this carry the bad habit into matches.
  2. In match play, players who have to ‘clean up’ usually have to bend to pick the ball up or retreat to gather it making them vulnerable to a ‘hit’ while they have their heads down.
  3. The player who has made the poor disposal generally lacks the instinctive motivation to run to the fall of the ball to help his team mate because he hasn’t practiced this discipline at training.
  4. The main element missing in these exercises is the ‘absolute protection’ of the ball carrier through good communication and shepherding leading to accurate delivery downfield.
  5. This is one of the bad habits carried through to us from junior football and if eliminated prepares the colts for senior footy by improving concentration and playing skill while reducing injury.
