Strategy #1 Deceive the sky and cross the ocean … 瞒天过海

Deceive the Sky and Cross the Ocean …

To accomplish one’s objective, it is sometimes necessary that a falsehood be openly displayed and the truth hidden.

In 589 A.D. it was the intention of the country of Su to conquer the neighbouring Chen. Sui’s General marched his troops back and forth along the banks of the Yangtze river, fooling Chen into thinking they were only patrolling. When Chen’s forces relaxed Sui attacked and their  victory ended 300 years of division and united China.

In the Spring and Autumn period (770 – 474 B.C.) Princes Xiao Bai and Jiao escaped to Chi to avoid assassination by their brother. Advisors Guan Zueng and Bao Su each accompanied one of the princes into exile to await the time the princes would overthrow their despotic brother.

Guan and Bao promised each other that no matter which prince succeeded to the throne one would assist the other to rule the country. Prince Xiao Bai eventually became King and sought to have his brother’s advisor Guan Zueng returned to him from Lu where he was living in exile.

If the ruler of Lu had known Xiao Bai’s true intention, which was to make Guan PM, he would never have released him. To avoid any suspicion in Lu, Xiao Bai played down the situation by requesting Guan be returned as a prisoner for punishment by sending a small bounty and jail cart to pick him up.
