Strategy #10 Knife Hidden under Smiling Face …  笑里藏刀

Knife Hidden under Smiling Face …

A strategy used to gain an advantage by inspiring trust in your opponents so they let down their guard.

In modern history, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941 serves as an example of this tactic. Japan had prepared for years to attack the United States while Japanese diplomats used every means at their disposal to assure the United States that they wanted to maintain peace.

They wanted the U.S. to be totally unprepared for attack. Their diplomats continued peaceful negotiations with the Americans right up to December 7 when they wiped the smile of their face with a devastating surprise attack on the American fleet at Pearl Harbour.

This strategy is now more commonly used in economic warfare rather than military advantage so beware of smiling faces and effusive displays of friendship at the negotiating table!
