Cross the River and Destroy the Bridge …
A bridge is useful for crossing a river; once the river is crossed, the bridge can become a liability.
In Chinese history, the ones who suffered hardships and sacrificed greatly for the new ruler’s, often ended up dead.
Like the bridge they were no longer useful and could be destroyed.
King of Yu had two loyal aides, without then he never would have conquered Yu.
In peacetime however the king saw these two men as liabilities and had one killed and the other sent into exile.
After Liu Bang united China one of his three valuable advisors wisely chose to leave the court and retire. Liu then imprisoned one of the remaining aides and then had the other chopped up into meat sauce!
All were effectively removed from the possibility of becoming competition with Liu.
Leaders need strong support when trying to achieve their goals however when their goals are achieved, through the superior talent of their advisors, the advisors become liabilities.
