Shi Ma was the commander of the army of Wei in the third century.
When the King of Wei decided to choose a successor to replace Shi Ma, the old general was very displeased with his replacement.
Over time to avert suspicion of his intentions, Shi Ma pretended to be growing very old and feeble, with no interest in the affairs of the state or the military.
During this time he colluded with palace guards who were enemies of his successor to overthrow the King.
This was achieved one day when the King and the successor were out hunting and on return were captured and deposed.
Japan adopted this strategy after WW II by quietly rebuilding its industries without arousing suspicion in the West.
China has also adopted a similar strategy by maintaining a non-threatening posture while developing a powerful industrial base.
