Strategy #3 Borrow another’s hand to kill … 借刀杀人

Borrow another’s hand to kill …

‘This is a strategy used to destroy an opponent without bloodying one’s own hands.’

In the Warring States Period (476-221B.C.) King Zu had a Prime Minister, Nang and 3 assistants. One assistant, Fei was jealous of colleague Buo who was the king’s favourite.

Fei then told PM Nang, that he was invited to a party to be hosted by Buo at Buo’s place.

Fei then went to Buo and told him the PM was coming to visit and suggested the PM would probably like a customary gift of some of the arms that Buo had recently captured on a campaign.

Fei then went to the PM and told him of the plot that Buo was hatching when the PM was invited to dinner.

The PM sent a confident to check out Fei’s story then had Buo arrested when the confident reported that there were arms at Buo’s gate. Buo realising he had been set up took his own life!

During the Spring and Summer Annals (770-476 B.C.) King Zhang had a clever plan to conquer Kuei. Before attacking he ordered his spies to find out who the most capable advisors were to the King of Kuei.

Then he swore that when he conquered Kuei, he would divide the land amongst them. The King of Kuei hearing of this had his advisors killed and without their council he was easy prey for Zhang.

During the Tiananmen Square Incident in 1989, Communist Party conservatives effectively utilised the student’s hands to eliminate the party’s secretary General Zhao Ziyang a liberal who was apparently being groomed to take over from Deng Xioping for the succession to supreme power.

The same thing happened in Shanghai a year earlier when students protested for better school conditions.

The radical and disruptive nature of the students actions, led to the demise of the very people sympathetic to their cause and they rendered Deng Xioping powerless to do anything about it.
