Strategy #32 Empty City… 空城计

Empty the City or empty the fort to make enemy think it is filled with traps …

During the Three Kingdom Period (220 – 265 A.D.), Zhuge Liang sent his troops off to battle leaving his city without protection.

His greatest enemy Sima Yi, commander of the army of Wei, made an unexpected approach while Zhuge Liang was in this vulnerable position.

Thinking quickly without arousing panic Zhuge Liang sent an old man to open the city gates and sweep the surrounds while he went to the palace tower. Here he drank wine and sang poetry to his conquerbines as if he didn’t have a care in the world.

Commander Sima Yi who had advanced on the city gates hesitated to enter, thinking this was a trap because of the lack of security.

He ordered his troops to withdraw while he sought more information regarding the true situation.

While Sima Yi wondered and waited, the soldiers of Zhuge Liang returned from their campaign and secured the city!

‘A deliberate display of weakness can conceal true vulnerability and confuse the enemy’

Creating a mystery by hiding your real strength is an effective weapon.
