Kalamunda Football Club Round 9, 12 June 2021
Cougars V’s Melville @ Ray Owen
This match highlighted the problem the team is currently experiencing due to a lack of four-quarter concentration.
Concentration is one of the five strategic elements in modern day football to achieve victory.
If the ‘Cougars’ thought that Melville were going to be an easy team to beat as they were in 4th position on the ladder, they were sadly mistaken!
Melville looked full of commitment when they came out in the first quarter and kicked 4.4 to our Cougars 5 points.
In every aspect of the game they played in front, were quick to help one another and their disposal by hand and foot was vastly superior to our boy’s efforts.
Coach Fare must have been having a conniption during this quarter and no doubt had some words of ‘encouragement’ for our players at the break as they then resumed and kicked 7.3 for the second quarter to Melville’s 3.2
During the third quarter our Cougars lapsed in concentration again and only kicked 2 points to Melville’s 1.4
This was a terrible quarter of ‘paddock’ football with the ball locked on the clubrooms flank, being kicked back and forward between the two teams half back and half forward lines.
No effort was made by our team to try and switch the play from these lines into a position where we could break free and play our running style of game. The ‘clubroom flank’ play has been a problem for our club for several seasons as we tend to get ‘bottled-up’ in this area and lose momentum.
Many of our players are afraid to make short leads to break free when we are in defense and conversely when we enter the forward 50 there is a tendency to take ‘pot-shots’ at goal instead of looking for short sharp leads in this zone.
Melville went on their merry way in the last quarter kicking 3.4 to our 2 goals to run out winners. Final scores: Kalamunda 8.11- 59, Melville 11.9 – 75
Best for Kalamunda: The usual bunch, with a welcome return to form by Tiger Morris.
