Round 7, Carlisle V’s Kalamunda

Round 7, Carlisle V’s Kalamunda at Carlisle Reserve

The Cougars retained their 3rd position on the ladder last week after beating Mosman Park by 30 points and were looking forward to playing Carlisle who after a slow start to the season had won their last two games albeit against the two bottom sides.

Cougars coach Chris Bolton would have stressed the need for his players not to take this game lightly as Carlisle may have been bolstered by players returning from the Perth Football Club.

This concern was allayed in the first quarter as Kala burst out of the blocks and kicked 5 quick goals before the Carlisle Cougars steadied and kicked 2.

Leo Lambert was everywhere in this term profiting from quick accurate delivery from the mid field. His sharp leading provided plenty of headaches for the Carlisle backs and he finished with 2 goals for the term.

In the second quarter Kala continued to pile on the pressure kicking 3.5 to Carlisle’s 2.1 with their forwards dominating play, however the breeze blowing across the Orrong Road flank made it difficult to score resulting in the high number of points kicked from set shots.

In the third term, Carlisle rallied and started to exert pressure around the ground resulting in pack play and many stoppages. Strong defense led by veteran Bret Van Groningen held Carlisle to 1.3 leaving Kala 37 points in front at the break.

Good midfield work from Tiger Morris and Trent Pottinger who profited from Jack Amos’s heavy duty in the ruck, continued to drive the ball forward to Jackson Bowen and Josh Harris who were a menace to the Carlisle backs throughout the game.

Jack Jago who was playing his 50th game for the club, would have been well pleased with the final result as Kala ran out 47- point winners.

Hawks Talk …

Round 6, Pickering Brook V’s Mundaring

A small crowd attended this match expecting a predictable result between the league leaders and the Roo’s, who were sitting in 4th. position on the HFA ladder.

As expected, the Hawks won this match by the huge margin of 134 points.

The significance of this is the disparity between the top and bottom teams in the ladder, who are being thrashed by well over 100 points in each round.

This situation has been developing for several years and has led to teams withdrawing from the competition, the latest being Warrick Greenwood who pulled out this season after struggling to have any success after joining in 2020.

The HFA was established in 1946 and has seen many changes with 11 teams participating over that period who are no longer in the current competition.

Over the time I have been involved in the Hills Football Association the population in the Darling Range district has almost doubled, yet the decline in interest to establish teams in the suburbs and regions has diminished.

This is disappointing because travel in the Hills does not involve a lot of travel, with traffic lights and congestion found in football associations bound by the Perth metropolitan area. Sunday football in the Hills also gave families a chance to attend matches and players who were required to work on Saturdays.

The less said about this match the better other than Mick Brescacin kicked 8 goals, Cory Christensen playing back, stopped just about everything helped by Mitch Shilling and Steve Caccetta roving, was at his creative best.

Final score: Pickering Brook; 22.17 – 149, Mundaring; 2.3 – 15
