Cougars Open their Account …

Round 3, Jandakot V’s Kalamunda at Atwell Reserve

The Jandakot Jets were favoured to win this game as they had beaten Hammersley Carine by 17 points in round 2.

From the first bounce the Cougars knew they were going to be in a tough encounter as the Jets moved the ball quickly into their forward line to goal through Mathew Grubelich who took an easy mark.

This may have spurred the Cougars on as they began to match the tough physical attention the Jets were handing out and through the efforts of Trent Pottinger and Tiger Morris drove the ball forward to Tyler Mouritz who marked and booted 2 goals for the term.

Ben Holman playing his 50th. game for the club was a prominent contributor throughout the quarter and finished his good work with a snap goal!

The Cougars realising they were 8 points behind at the start of the second quarter, continued to match the Jets with their physicality and despite kicking the ball out of defence to the scoring flank and some very sloppy handball, finished the quarter 6 points in front through the efforts of Ben Holman, Jackson Bowen and Mitch Della-Franka.

The third term saw the Cougars start to achieve some ascendency over the Jets through the accuracy of Tiger Morris and skipper Trent Pottinger.  Their long kicking into attack brought Joel Peters, Josh Quarrell and Cooper Boyd in to score.

Ethan Faulds and Ben Dupont led the backline to limit the Jets to a single goal for the quarter, resulting in a lead of 10 points at three quarter time.

The final quarter started with some very ugly football as the Jets tried to claw back the Cougars lead, however the Cougars started to play the style of composed football coach Bolton had been striving for.

They draw further away from the Jets with goals from Leo Lambert, Joel Peters and Tyler Mauritz while our backs kept them goalless.

What became apparent in this quarter was the fitness of the Cougars compared to the Jets, who looked like they had become tired in the hot conditions, leaving the cougars to run away and win the game by 37 points.

Final scores: Kalamunda; 12.5 – 77, Jandakot; 5.10 – 40

Best Players: Trent Pottinger, Ben Holman, Tyler Mouritz and Mitch Della-Franka

Special mention: Tiger Morris, great return to the Cougars!

Goals: Tyler Mouritz 4, Joel Peters 2,  Jackson Bowen 1, Josh Quarrell 1, Ben Holman 1, Cooper Boyd 1

Bruce Glover reporting:

Mark of the Day: There were many, Jackson’s in the first Quarter, running backwards in a pack stretched out an arm and pulled in a superb “one hander”.

Play of the Day: There were also many great passages of play. Quarter 4, Tiger gathered the ball on the centre line and with a one bounce dash delivered the ball nicely to the goal square where Leo “flashed” in marked and goaled.  Many “great football gems”. Thanks Gents.

‘The Wrap’

Well for the second week in a row I have to say…. What a win!!

After a week where our playing group had significant numbers home with Covid and sickness (on top of some injuries, work and family commitments), it was always going to be a huge challenge to get a result against an impressive Scarborough side!

We were able to scratch together a side of 20 girls with a brave handful toughing it out despite being home sick all week. The 11.15am start gave us slick but very hot conditions and both sides had a few opportunities in the 1st quarter but no score was registered. You had to feel for players on both sides after they slogged it out for 18 minutes without any reward.

By halfway through the 2nd quarter we had lost two girls to injury which meant we had no bench… This, and some skilful finishing from Scarborough saw the girls go into half time behind. The half time message was all about praising the girls for having a red hot go under trying circumstances, with an aim of trying to win the 3rd quarter. The girls dug in and did just that with a stunning 3 goal quarter giving us a small lead at the final change.

Not to be denied, Scarborough kept on coming but the grit and determination of the Cougars girls saw them hold on and win by 4 points for the second week in a row.

The message post-game was that as a coach I was not ‘surprised’ by the effort shown, as this group has displayed their 110% application to all games so far and some tough pre-season training sessions.

It took a special effort from all 18 players left on the field for the second half, especially those who were still unwell or coming off a week of covid!

We did have a couple of standouts, with Meg Bruce (defying a close check from the oppo) to dominate from start to finish and Selena Grieves driving us forward countless times off the wing!

I could make special mentions all most every other player, but it was truly a combined effort to get the job done! Aitch.
