Great Achievement by Life Member
It’s with great pleasure we publish this special edition to honor Alex Haigh in playing his 300th game for the Kalamunda Cougars. Alex has made a vast contribution to the club over the the past years as a footballer, committee man, publisher in social media and contributor to this publication.
His achievements are best described herewith, by officials of the club have known him over his career.
Congratulations Alex ‘Helmet’ Haight who played his 300th game for the Kalamunda Cougars against Rossmoyne in round 15 2026 at John Reid Oval.
Alex is a fearless competitor who is best described by everyone at the club as courageous. He has made a massive contribution to the Kalamunda Cougars by not only playing 300 games, but also having won the Most Courageous club award in 2008, Reserves Premiership in 2010, 3rds Captain in 2020, various team awards over his playing career, and life membership in 2016.
Off field Helmet has been a committee member since 2020 and has volunteered his time to help out in almost every role there is. He is a massive part of our community, he exemplifies what it is to be a Cougar and is one of the all time great clubmen.
To celebrate Alex’s milestone, we’ve asked a few of his past coaches to give some words about the great man.
Bruce Mercer –
“Alex was a talented and courageous player for our club. He was very quick when he was younger and was a very skilful player too. Alex was very easy to coach and because of his versatility we were able to play him in multiple positions across the ground. Not only is Alex a great footballer but he’s just a good person to have around your football club. I hear he’s also pretty handy at guitar hero! “
Andrew Mann –
“Helmet was such a courageous player and often put his body on the line to win the ball and beat his player. The backline stood taller knowing Helmet was out there with them. Not only is he a great footy player but he’s genuinely good bloke and a massive part of our club. Congrats on your 300th mate!”
Chris Williams –
“Al has been a cornerstone of Kalamunda Football club for 2 decades, and to reach 300 games is an amazing and exclusive achievement. A stingy back man who will always give you a fierce contest, Al has been a tireless representative and custodian of the club on and off the field over the journey. Congratulations Al, well deserved mate, looking forward to seeing you turn it on for the big day!”
Michael Fox –
“When Alex first arrived at the club, he was a skinny kid who went hard at the ball. He impressed everyone with his courage but his style of play caught up with him resulting in a few big hits and a helmet which gave him his nick name. On field, Helmet has always been cool under pressure and used the ball well. A strong backline player who was always one of the first players picked in the team. Off field, Helmet is one of the all time great clubmen. His ability to stay engaged with the club, the players and the supporters for such a long time is admirable. Congratulations Helmet on 300 games.”
Pricey –
“Big Al – or Helmet, as many know him – has been part of this club for as long as anyone can remember. I taught him maths back in school, and it was clear even then that he was far better at footy than equations. The first word that comes to mind when I think of Al is ‘courage’. He attacked every contest with fearless intensity, never backing down, and was often the last one to get up after a stoppage. He represented the club with distinction at every level, always bringing the same unwavering commitment and heart. Congratulations on your 300th Big Al – Love your work.”
Becks –
I first met Helmet in 2017 and even back then, it was clear he was a well-respected and prominent figure at the club. A life member, club historian, team manager, and is still pulling on the boots after all these years, he’s the kind of clubman you can’t help but look up to. I’ve had the pleasure of playing alongside Helmet and now coaching him. He’s someone you can always rely on. That blistering pace I’d heard so much about still makes the odd appearance, and for someone who spent most of his career down back, he’s a surprisingly handy set shot. 300 games is an incredible achievement, and I’m honoured to call you a teammate and more importantly a friend. Go well, mate!”
Jayden Finley –
Al is one of the greats, does so much for this club and never asks for anything in return. On the field his leadership and experience is valued amongst the playing group with his decision making in games second to none.
Al has definitely made me as well as countless others feel very welcomed at this club and I can’t wait to be there when he runs out for game 300, Congrats mate! 
Dean Mann –
I think its’s fair to say Al was a favourite of all the coaches and teammates who encountered him.
As a footballer Al was as tough and courageous as they come, his skill level was very good and in the early days he had a good level of fitness. His biggest attribute though was his selflessness, he was a utility player in every sense of the word and would play any role required by the team.
Off-Field he has always been a great clubman and team man. I genuinely don’t think he has ever put himself above the team or the club which is rare these days. Some people make the place better just by being present and Al certainly fits that bill.
Al, you are a legend of this footy club & I hope you enjoy all the accolades you deserve for reaching 300 games. You have not only been a player and a teammate to many over the journey but also a good mate as well.
