Bullcreek Leeming V’ Kalamunda at Beasley Reserve.
The last time these teams met was back in July 2023 in round 15, which the Cougars won by 17 points, unfortunately the win was soured by injury with two players stretchered off and veteran ruckman Chris Hegarty’s season finished.
The game started with Daniel Griffin and Cormac White who thwarted Bullcreek’s tall ruckman’s effort who provide the ‘Bombers’ with the bulk of forward entries into their forward line.
Their work enabled the Cougars through Trent Pottinger, Tiger Morris and Jarrod Young to move the ball quickly into attack with Jarrod Brockbernd and Tyler Mouritz kicking early goals.
The Cougars kicked 3.4 during this term, including one from Michael DeGasperis, however the Bombers backs who were desperate in defence provided plenty of opportunities for their team mates to break out of defence and work the ball into attack. Fortunately, with hard checking our backs kept their score to 1.1.
On the far boundary we were concerned with the ease the Bombers were linking with accurate passing through the mid field to their tall forwards making life miserable for Josh Touchell and his charges.
This concern was realised in the second quarter when the Cougars came under sustained pressure from the Bombers and began to run second to the ball.
This encouraged the umpires to become involved in the game and commence awarding a disproportionate number of free kicks to the Bombers!
Encouragement from our supporters on the far flank, regarding the rules of the game, also seemed to be affecting the decisions being made by the umpires!
The quarter ended with the Cougars leading by 3 points after allowing the Bombers to spend most of the term in their forward line and kick 2.6!
The third term began as an arm-wrestle with the Cougars using their old tactic of playing the clubroom flank. This allowed the Bullcreek tall men to camp themselves along that flank and mark everything that suited them!
This tactic has been the Cougars downfall on many occasions and if used in the future against stronger opponents will lead to tears.
Coach Bolton advised me before the game commenced, there were ‘no excuses’ We don’t know what he said at ¾ time however it must have inspirational, or the players must have been ashamed of themselves as they came out a different team in the last quarter and completely outplayed the opposition, kicking 4.4 to the Bombers 1.2 to win by 23 points.
This was all very well, however if the Cougars want to play ‘A’ grade football in the future, they must start to think about ‘ultimate concentration’ and ‘composure’ to regain something they lost several seasons ago!
