Round 5 2026, West Coast V’ Kalamunda

Round 5, West Coast V’ Kalamunda at City Beach Oval

After winning their first game for the season in round 4 against Melville by 73 points the Cougars would have approached this round full of confidence to beat West Coast, currently sitting in 5th spot on the PFL Ladder.

On a fine afternoon the Cougars started this game in a blaze of glory with Tyler Mouritz kicking 4 goals in the first quarter. West Coast had no answer to this on their home ground and with a slight breeze advantage could only manage 2 goals in reply.

It looked as though the Cougars were going to post their second win for the season with the quality of their teamwork carrying on from the previous week against Melville.

The coach of West Coast must have decided his players needed to exert some pressure on the Cougars from the start of the second term. It appeared they agreed with his wishes as they started to break free and kick 4.4 for the quarter to the Cougars 3.4. improving their teamwork and confidence to half time.

The Cougars must have had a ‘nap’ during the break because they came out to be soundly trounced by West Coast who booted 3.6 to the Cougars no-score to put themselves in front by 3 points at three quarter time.

No comparison could be made between the Cougars first quarter and the one they dished up to three quarter time. There was a complete lack of concentration and the will to try and stop West Coast running free all over the ground!

Coach Bolton must have been beside himself at three quarter time trying to get some commitment from his team. There was a complete lack of communication, control, commitment and concentration during the third term and the lack of these elements had led West Coast to become supremely confident they could run over the Cougars in the last quarter.

Unfortunately, this is what happened as West Coast led the Cougars on a merry dance in the last quarter kicking 4 goals to the Cougars single effort to go on and win by 23 points.

This was a most disappointing effort from the Cougars. There is a number of players who have to be honest with themselves and realise they are playing in another league now and if these efforts continue, we will be back in C grade next season!
