Round 8, Kalamunda V’s Collegians at Harmony Reserve
The last time these teams met was in round 11 2023 at David Cruikshank Reserve, where the Cougars had a bad day as they were soundly beaten by 84 points slipping into 9th position on the PFL ‘B’ grade ladder.
Coach Bolton indicated after the last game against Bullcreek Leeming that Collegians would be a ‘hard nut to crack’ despite sitting in second bottom spot on the PFL ladder.
This turned out to be the case at Harmony Fields where the Cougars were surprised when Collegians kicked the first two goals against them before they got under way kicking 5.5 to 4.1 in the first term. Cormac White. Trent Pottinger and Tyler Mouritz were prominent in the quarter and Michael De Gasperis showed plenty of form to kick two goals.
In the second quarter the Cougars lost concentration and with it momentum, to let Collegians take complete control of the game. They ran second to the ball and suffered the consequences. At the long break the Cougars trailed by 8 points and failed to kick a goal for the term. This was the third game in a row when the Cougars have played a poor 2nd quarter and to continue playing this way will lead to problems against teams above them on the ladder.
In the third, they awoke, however inaccuracy from set shots in front of goal made the job of getting back into the game difficult. They finished the quarter by kicking 2.6 to Collegians 2.1.
The quarter featured some very ugly football with many stoppages, however the Cougars managed to keep the ball in their forward line for the best part of the quarter, despite the desperate defence of the opposition.
The third term ended with Collegians 3 points in front and the game headed for a thriller. The Cougars once again threw themselves into the task with Tyler Mouritz, Josh Quarrell and Adrian Cowin goaling, Trent Pottinger who had worked his guts out chimed in with another and the Cougars managed to scrape home by 5 points.
This Cougars seemed to play this game with little reward for their efforts. Loss of concentration when applying their ‘press’ has resulted in the opposing sides breaking away in past games. Highlighted in this game by Collegians, breaking out of defence, down the flanks and on three occasions booting long goals to an open back line.
