Round 3, 23 April 2022 (C1) Kalamunda V’s Carlisle
After losing to Jandakot last week by a single point, the Cougars were ready to atone for this loss in taking on Carlisle who were in third spot on the ladder.
My spy told me that Carlisle had been hit hard by disease and injury and had been forced to make several changes to their side.
This may have been reflected in their play as at the end of the first quarter they were behind by 13 points. Nevertheless, Coach Trenberth would have stressed at the break, the Cougars needed to concentrate on their disposal as many scoring opportunities were wasted resulting in turnovers.
In the second quarter Chris Hegarty took control of the ruck and started to provide opportunities in the centre for Trent Pottinger, playing his 150th to drive the ball into attack.
Unfortunately, much of this good work went unrewarded as the team kicked 3 – 6 for the quarter to lead Carlisle by 24 points at half time.
In the third, the lack of big bodies in the forward line highlighted a problem the Cougars will have to face as many attacks were repelled by the Carlisle backs reducing our score to 1 – 3 for the quarter.
Our backline led by Jarrod Brockbernd and J.J. Jennings did a superb job keeping Carlisle to a single goal.
In the final quarter many of our young players who had given their all, began to tire, allowing Carlisle to win the quarter by 5 points, all to late!
The Cougars then ‘chaired’ 150 game club champion Trent Pottinger off to rousing applause!
Final scores: Kalamunda 9-14 – 68, Carlisle 7 – 4 – 46
Most noteworthy: Joel Peters 3 goals? also playing his 50th. also Jayden Finley 50 games. Congratulations to you both, now go on to 100!
BG’s players of the day: Chris Hegarty – best game yet! J.J. Jennings top effort and returning player Rhys Cushing.
Goal of the day: ‘Mad Max’ Bradley’s superb running goal …
