C1 Grand Final Swan Athletic V’s Cockburn Lakes at Bassendean Oval 2024
This match turned out to be a very ‘lack luster’ affair despite fine weather and good playing conditions. The breeze was blowing across the ground favoring the Guildford end of the ground at about 3 goal intensity.
At no stage in this encounter did Cockburn Lakes look as though they were going to win this game as the Swans defended well and won in the ruck through Cameron Yukich. They used the ball well when coming out of defense while kicking against the wind and had a greater desire to win the ground ball.
Cockburn Lakes ruined any chance they had by getting bottled up on the grandstand flank when they were kicking with the wind and failing to get the ball into the corridor where their tall players could take advantage of it.
At half time the Swans led by 3 goals’, we were hoping for a revival from the Warriors, however after a few short rallies to kick their second goal in the last half, they succumbed to the Swans hard tackling and spoiling tactics for the rest of the game to lose by 28 points.
This was a disappointing game as these sides had dominated the C1 competition this season. We expected more as both sides will be promoted into ‘B’ grade next year.
Final scores: Swan Athletic 6.11 – 47, Cockburn Lakes 2.7 – 19
