Colts and E2 Cougars feature in Final Round 1
The Colts who finished in 5th position on the EGT Drew Banfield Colts Ladder, travelled to Anning Park in Southlake to take on Whitford for a chance to play in the semi-finals. The team were confident they could win this encounter despite losing their round 9 game by a margin of 27 points, however they had improved teamplay significantly since them.
The Colts were successful in their quest to win this game, unfortunately I was unable to see the game however their coach Damion Whitcombe later advised they had won by 3 goals and will play Cockburn Lakes in final round 2.
The E2 ‘All Stars’ had finished the home and away season just a few percentage points behind Nollamara in second spot on the ladder. They were more than confident they had struck top form to play Nollamara in this qualifying final.
In the first quarter the Cougars dominated the play keeping the ball in their forward line. For the best part of the term they controlled the ruck and midfield through Braydon Becker, Jaya Terima and Caleb Boyd with Angelo Vallis and Ryan Mercer kicking 3 goals to give them a lead of 15 points.
In the second quarter Nollamara bounced back with determination and hard tackling to outscore the Cougars by a goal for the term.
Coach Becker must have given his charges some ‘encouragement’ during the half time break as they came out in the third and kicked 4 goals to take the initiative back again to lead by 27 points at the final break.
The Cougars started in control of the last term playing team football while Nollamara became ragged and missed opportunities. The Cougars were leading the score for the quarter by 4 points when one of the Nollamara players was severely injured and an ambulance had to be called. Considerable time was lost during the period the injured player was attended to by medical staff.
Finally a decision was made by the Nollamara Captain to concede the game, in view of the accident and the fact they were 37 points behind the Cougars at that stage of the match.
This was not the best outcome for the game, however a win is a win and the Cougars will now progress into a second semi-final against Coolbinia at an avenue to be advised.
Final scores: Kalamunda 10.6 – 72, Nollamara 5.5 – 35
