Strategy #7 Create something from nothing … 无中生有

Create Something From Nothing …

The object of this strategy is to make the unreal seem real; the empty full.

The An Lushan Rebellion was a devastating rebellion against the Tang dynasty of China. The rebellion overtly began on 16 December 755, when general An Lushan declared himself emperor in Northern China, thus establishing a rival Yan Dynasty, and ended when Yan fell on 17 February 763

In one battle in 755 A.D., An Lu Lushan laid siege to a city in  Henan Province with superior numbers and  forced Commander Zhang Xuen to defend his city to the last man.

Zhang ordered the making of thousands of straw men dressed to look like soldiers to be hung over the city walls by rope. An Lushans soldiers thought the straw men were real and were going to attack so they shot thousands of arrows at them! Zangs soldiers then hoisted up the straw men taunting An Lushans men and thanking them for the gift of arrows.

Zhang then later ordered 500 crack soldiers to be lowered over the city walls. this time An Lushans men thought this was another plow to gain more arrows and ignored the lowering while laughing and returning to camp.

Zhang’s crack team quickly reassembled and charged into the enemy camp surprising and defeating them.

During the Korean War the opposing forces often faced one another from fixed positions for long periods of time.

The Chinese used empty cans to make a lot of noise during the night to disturb and unsettle the Americans who after a period became accustomed to the rattling and relaxed. The Chinese waited while continuing to rattle the cans during the night, then attacked and secured positions under the cover of the rattling cans.
