HFA Round 3, 8 May 2022 Hawks V’s Gidgegannup at Pickering Brook
At the start of this game the Gidge. Bulldogs were short of players and it wasn’t until the rest of their teammates turned up from Mother’s Day lunches, they were able to field a full side but only had one reserve!
The Hawks got off to a slow start with some very poor disposal into the forward line before finding their mojo to go and kick 6-4 for the first quarter.
In the second, John Armstrong and Mick Brescasin provided the focal point for the Hawks in attack and despite another slow start to the quarter they finished up kicking 7-6 due to some inaccurate kicking from set shots at close range.
At the half time break the Bulldogs had only scored 2 points and were looking quite hapless with poor disposal leading to many turnovers, which Luke Outridge, Jack Giancono and Tim McQuoid pounced on to deliver into their forward line.
In the third the Bulldogs rallied and kicked 2-4 to the Hawks 2-5!
This was an awful quarter to watch as the Hawks reverted to their old habit of playing ‘paddock’ footy which must have made coach Outridge despair!
If it hadn’t been through the efforts of Rowan Arnott, Michael Ellul and Jos Vellinga the Bulldogs would have won the quarter. One of the moves Gidge. made during that quarter was to move veterans Tim Tanner and Justin Pitt into the centre who began to give them some much needed drive.
In the final term the Hawks ‘composed’ themselves through the advice of their coach and began to play with with control, which improved their disposal to finish the quarter 5-4 to the Bulldogs 3-8.
This win should restore some of the Hawks confidence after their loss against Chidlow in round 2 and set them up for the rest of the season.
