Night Game: Roos V’s Hawks, round 5

Round 5 Mundaring V’s Pickering Brook
  • Guest Reporter Ben Harffey

It was the big test this week, beat Mundaring away and under lights. Saturday night was perfect conditions for footy on and off the field. Great to see/hear the new and old mums out and about.

The night didn’t start well with both myself and Luke pulling out with soreness. This left us with only Steve and 2/3 of the Outy boys running/water. The lads carried on from last year’s prelim, when we belted these guys. Nobody could have beat us that day, so we didn’t think they were going to let us stroll into goal all night. Micky B slotted the 1st of his 4, his presence was godly as Army copped their captain’s presence. Dante was solid again with several don’t argues and that powerful left boot sliced through the guts. The lads were red hot in the 1st as the faithful saw us take a couple goal lead into the break.

Without Luke or Kade our midfield was still looking menacing. Oh, if you were there, you may have noticed a small, darty looking bloke running around. Yes, Jetts is back and looking like he never left, after a brief stint at Wongan Hills, he came back to his new home where hopefully he finishes his days as a Hawk. Arny took about 10 marks through the centre as he became the link up player. He certainly wasn’t getting any respect from their ruckman as he clunked about 20 marks for the match. As the ball got a bit dewier, some fumbles started to creep into the game and some big hits/tackles followed. Andy G pulled on the boots for his 1st game in orange/black, and his dash, composure and strength of halfback was well and truly worthy. You can forgive blokes for easing into the 1st game, but he definitely wants to be a part of this team. Great to see the influx of wogs this season, everyone one is welcome to this club but more locals just seem right. Dewar laid a huge tackle, climbing on the defenders back like a monkey, he earned the free and slotted a much-needed goal.

After a tight 2nd, we were ready for them to start strong in the 3rd. By this point I was pretty cooked running boundary and my memory is a bit cloudy. Our discipline and kicking allowed them to get within a point, but you could see they were running out of petrol tickets. We started to revert back to kicking long and even with this forward line, a good defence will chop it off all day. We were loosing some composure until Arny and Mitch rallied the troops in the centre. Arny reverted back to the big fist to throw their mids out of position, Timmy and Matty G(2 goals) were all over it as they pushed up to make a presence.

Tommy was taking some big contested grabs down back and Bainy tried making his presence felt, winning a free after he hit a bloke late, he then butchered the kick straight into the man on the mark. Luckily something must have rubbed off his boot onto theirs, the shot at goal was equally terrible. Get to training Bainsy!

With only a goal in it, this was building to be a classic. The lads saved the best for last though as again that 4th qtr ruthlessness kicked in. After a 5-minute arm wrestle , we went bang, bang very quickly and put them on the back foot. In fact, they couldn’t even get it forward after that, the only 2 goals they got were very late and a kick off the ground in our half forward line, nearly taking Mitchy J’s fingers with it, was their other goal. The icing on the cake was a Jetts special, but standard for him, duck and weave, ignore the players next to him and slammed it home from 45m. The result could’ve been even better had we not kicked 5.7! But considering we haven’t beat them on their home turf for a few years now, during the home and away season. This was an impressive step towards the ultimate goal, but remember lads, premierships aren’t won in May!

Another big home game against Bullsbrook this Sunday. The machine plays game#50 this weekend, well done Arny, only took 5 years!
CARN THE HAWKS!
