Cougars win in appalling conditions!

Round 13, 9 July 2022 (C1) Kalamunda V’s Hamersley/Carine

This game reminded me of games we played in the 1960’s when the winters were wetter and just about every Saturday it rained!

Rain it did, for the full four quarters and to make matters worse we were in the clouds up here on the ‘Mountain’. The cloud was so thick that at most times it was impossible to see the players on the far side of the ground!

These are the days when ‘upsets’ can occur, when the conditions make playing with skill nearly impossible, however there are some standard rules for playing in wet weather when the ball is like a bar of wet soap.

They include no finessing, keep kicking the ball to a team mate on his chest, have a man at the back of the pack for contested marks as the ball slips through wet hands, try ‘sweeping’ the ball out into the open instead of trying to pick it up and when packs start to form and always have a spare man ‘off the pack’.

Tall players who find difficulty picking up a wet ball should be encouraged to ‘sweep’ the ball off the ground to rovers and players backing-up.

Coach Trenberth would have encouraged the Cougars to play this style of football considering the conditions, where they led from start to finish by 24 points.

This was a team effort led by the usual suspects, with new players Jack Jago and Dustin Brown acquitting themselves well. Returning players Tiger Morris, Brendyn McLeish, ‘birthday boy’ Ryan Steers and Ethan Carrington all played well to gain this victory.

Final scores: Kalamunda 7.10 – 52,  Hamersley/Carine 4.4 – 28

Best players: the ‘Usual Suspects’

Goals: Josh Harris 2, Trent Pottenger 2, Dustin Brown 1, Blair Southcott 1, Scott Foley 1

Most noteworthy: Vlas Kailis, in at every opportunity and Chris Hegarty providing many opportunities from the ruck.

Bruce Glover’s plays of the day: No report this round due to the inclement weather.

Next weeks game: Round 14, 16 July High Wycombe V’s Kalamunda, Scott Reserve 2.20 pm.
